Police or highways vehicle removal powers and costs.

If you breakdown by law you have up to 2 hours for your own breakdown recovery agent to rescue you except as follows.

Under what circumstances can the police remove my vehicles?

The police and Hyways officers have the legal power to remove vehicles in the following circumstances:- If the vehicle is illegally parked.
If the vehicle is causing an actual or potential danger or obstruction.  If the vehicle is apparently abandoned.  If the vehicle is believed to contain evidence relating
to an offence.  If the driver of the vehicle is unable to produce on demand either a valid driving licence or a valid certificate of insurance, when requested to by a police officer   AND that officer reasonably believes the documentation does not exist or is false, the vehicle may be seized and held until the legislation is
complied with. Details of this and what to do, will be served on the driver and/or owner of the vehicle.
The vehicle is being driven in a careless or inconsiderate manner and is or was causing or likely cause alarm, distress or annoyance either on the road or off the road without authority. Other conditions then have to be complied with by the Police before the vehicle can be seized.

The police have the legal power to seize a vehicle as evidence from anywhere, but in certain circumstances, may also need a court order first.
In the other three circumstances, the vehicle must be on a public highway.
< style="font-weight: bold;">Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) Special Constables and Highways Agency
Traffic Officers have the same legal powers to remove vehicles.
